ETV (Ethiopia Television) is an Ethiopian government-owned TV channel. It’s the only one in Ethiopia due to the government ban of private media. Its programming includes news, sport, music, comedy, sew le sew drama movie and other entertainment. It airs in the languages Amharic, Afan Oromo, Af Somali, Tigrinya, QafarAf, French, Al Arabiyah, Russian, Serbian as well as English.
ETV Live has entertainment programs like ‘Ethiopian Idol,’ which features similar content to that of American Program American Idol in addition to dancing competitions. In recent years ETV Live has transmitted a few matches per week from some European Football Leagues (2007 Spanish La Liga, 2008 English Premier League), plus some international matches. ETV transmits its programmes on 4 satellite stations.
History
Ethiopian Television was established in 1964 with assistance from the British firm, Thomson. It was created to highlight the Organization of African Unity (OAU) meeting that took place in Addis Ababa that same year. Color television broadcast began in 1982 in commemoration of the founding of Workers’ Party of Ethiopia. The current structure and goals of ETV were established 1987 with Proclamation 114/87.

ETV (Ethiopian TV) has two regular channels broadcasting to Ethiopia:
ETV1 – The main TV Channel with 24 hours 7 days a week coverage, with content on news, interview, sport, culture, politics, documentaries, economy and movies.
ETV2 – A Television channel mostly for Addis Ababa TV’s service, (the capital’s Television Station) plus English, French, Serbian, Russian and Arabic language programming.
